Biography & Geek Symptoms:
..Leonardo da Vinci was born April 15, 1452 in Vinci (a town in Florence) as an illegitimate son of a Florentine Notary, Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, who may have been a slave woman of middle eastern origin
..his full name, Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, translates into english as "Leonardo, son of (Mes)ser Peiro from Vinci". As an illegimate son, he was not entitled to claim his father's surname. Instead, his shortened name merely announces him as: Leonardo 'hailing from' Vinci Town
..he spent the first five years of his life in Anchiano, a hamlet in the vicinity of Vinci. Thereafter, he lived in the household of his father, grandparents and uncle in the small town of Vinci. Around this time, his father had married a 16-year-old girl who loved Leonardo but died young.
..in his early years, he showed great potential and easy mastery of his lessons, and was unable to pursue a narrow field of study. He would set out to learn a multitude of things, and shortly abandon most of them. However, two passions remained constant in him: the greater passion for painting, which he unceasingly pursued throughout his life; and a lesser passion for science and arithmetic, of which he was, nonetheless, a master, which allowed him to design and create technical inventions in the course of his recurring employment as an engineer usually during times of war

..at age 14, he was apprenticed to the great Andrea di Cione, also known as Verrocchio, who was one of the most successful artists of the Early Renaissance, having influenced the works of a younger generation of artists which included Pietro Perugino, Lorenzo di Credi, and Michelangelo
..as an apprentice to Verrocchio, Leonardo would have been exposed to a vast range of technical learning in the crafts of drafting, chemistry, metallurgy, metal working, plaster casting, leather working, mechanics and carpentry in addition to the central skills of drawing, painting, sculpting and modeling
..at age 20, he qualified as a master in the Guild of St. Luke, the guild of artists and medical doctors
..between 1476 to 1481, around the time he was 24 to 29 years old, Leonardo had his own workshop set up for him by his father. He came to be recognized during this time as a notable talent, receiving an important commission to paint an altarpiece in 1478 for the Chapel of St. Bernard, and "The Adoration of the Magi" in 1481 for the Monks of San Donato a Scopeto.
