Spider-Man Facts and Trivia :
..Spider-Man enjoyed early popularity in 1970s Japan, and served as spiritual predecessor to today's popular "Power Rangers" series of characters. Read on for more details:
..The character of Spider-Man had the following Japanese incarnations:
....the 1978 live-action "Spider-Man (tokusatsu)" series, produced by Toei Company Limited for Japanese television. In cooperation with Bandai, the tv series featured giant robots and vehicles. The storyline had nothing to do with the Marvel character. This TV series had a major impact on Japanese live-action shows, specifically the Super Sentai series (known outside of Japan as "Power Rangers") which has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. This TV series was the first to introduce numerous formulaic conventions in Japanese television, such as the use of piloted giant robots to destroy giant monsters, and the premise of monster battles on two scales, human-size and giant-robot size.
....the "Spider-Man: The Manga" published in Japan in Monthly Shonen Magazine from January 1970 to September 1971. In this incarnation, Yu Komori is Spider-Man and faces off against Japanese versions of villains such as Electro and the Lizard. This series was later translated to english and reprinted by Marvel Comics across 31 issues from December 1997 to April 1999.
